Singing Welsh Songs with Andy Jones and Harpotunities
CV Folk Freshers Workshop
If you love singing and are seeking a different form of vocal music, this is the workshop for you.
Presented by CVFolk in the Albany Theatre’s Clive Benfield Studio, the afternoon workshop starts at 2pm. It marks the return of Andy Jones, choir leader for Côr Cymraeg Coventry, and provides a rare opportunity to try out a beautiful form of Welsh music called cerdd dant or ‘music of the string’. This is a traditional musical art which involves singing a poetic counter-melody over a melody line played on the harp. For this workshop, the music will be provided by members of Harpotunities, a Coventry-based organisation that promotes the harp and gives people access to this wonderful instrument as musicians, as audiences and as therapy.
During the workshop, Andy will guide you in learning a couple of songs to sing in two part harmony. Singers of all levels of experience – especially including beginners – are welcome and you do not need to be able to read music, or indeed be a Welsh speaker. Just follow Andy’s lead and soon you’ll be part of a delightful musical experience.
Admission to this 2-hour workshop is £8 or £5 concessions (including students and pensioners). Book in advance or pay on arrival to gain first-hand experience of this unique and engaging traditional art form.
