Photojournalism Workshop with David Shaw
Sunday 14th September 2025

Photo Stories

Narrative photojournalism and documentary photography techniques.

This practical masterclass will cover how professional photographer David Shaw creates photo stories that give narrative through journalistic and visual techniques. Learn how to research and approach your subjects, discuss the ethics involved in representing others, and see a demonstration of the different kinds of photos to make when telling stories through photography. These techniques will offer a baseline for the attendees to then go out and start making their own photo essays.

There will be a practical element of the class, for which the participants will need any form of digital camera (including phones!). File size/ quality is unimportant during the practical element of the class, as we are focusing on the content of the image/ story. Attendees will then review each others work as a group.

The workshop will be from 11am – 6pm and tickets are FREE.

About David J Shaw:

David J Shaw is a photographer and journalist based in the UK, working both at home and internationally. Shaw works on a range of assignments and long-term projects that explore community, identity and representation.

Alongside this, he conducts investigations and produces reportage on human rights and social issues. Shaw’s work is regularly recognised through awards, publications in leading outlets, grants and exhibitions. Shaw represented the London College of Communication at the 2012 London Olympics as an official torch bearer. He sold the torch on eBay and used the money to fund investigations in Gaza, Lebanon and India.

After a career pivot working in the emergency services, Shaw returns to photography with new skills and motivations. He is focusing on work documenting the lives of those living in Jaywick, alongside a long-term project about traditional upland farmers in Wales, a portrait project about LGBTQ+ football fans and an exhibition of testimonials of those living on indeterminate prison sentences in the UK.
