Summer 2021 – live entertainment is back!

The Albany has got its sun hat at the ready as a new season of sizzling summer events is announced as part of Coventry’s diverse cultural offering for 2021.

Summer is on its way and so is live theatre! At Coventry’s Albany Theatre, it’s full steam ahead as indoor venues are set to welcome audience members back through their doors in the coming months.

Kevin Shaw, CEO and Artistic Director of The Albany said:

“After a year like no other, we are thrilled to have a positive plan going forward following the Government roadmap. Although we understand these reopening dates are subject to change, we are confident that with the great success of the vaccine rollout and dedication of the public, our summer season will go ahead as planned. Our diverse programme is packed with outstanding professional and community productions, weekend festivals, and exciting partnership projects that will showcase the development the theatre is making in its arts for life initiative within the community. We are itching to share our fun-packed season with events that will welcome theatergoers back with a bang!”

The theatre’s Summer season will go on sale Thursday 1 April at midday (this is no April fools!) with a spectacular schedule of events that will delight the whole family. Ranging from world-renowned touring theatre and dance, local talent, acclaimed tribute acts, children’s favourites, and well-known names from stage and screen, it’s time to begin booking your summer of fun in the city of culture 2021!

Drama highlights from July through to September include a week-long festival from the National Drama Festivals Association (NDFA) which will see the best in amateur theatre join together for a variety of events including one-act and full-length plays, workshops with top theatre professionals, and a daylong conference based around issues of diversity and inclusivity which challenge British amateur theatre.

The Albany studio will play host to numerous high-quality drama this summer including Four Forty Theatre Company who will bring their ingeniously outrageous A Midsummer Night’s Dream & Macbeth: A Shakespeare Double Bill, suitable for all ages in July. Tiny Room Theatre presents Loop, a raw and thought-provoking piece exploring themes of depression and mental health in September.

Dance lovers will not be disappointed as The Russian National Ballet is set to stun audiences as they return to the UK with the most famous ballet of all time, Swan Lake. The Albany is fast becoming the home of Strictly Come Dancing stars, with Giovanni Pernice and Neil Jones gracing the stage this Autumn with their solo tours. The summer is no different, The Ballroom Boys, Ian Waite and Vincent Simone, are back with ‘act two’ of their glamourous show filled with dance, song and comedy galore.

The Albany is well known for its superb tribute acts and music, this summer they’ve got some of the best from across the county. They kick it off with Pulp Friction, the world’s best Quentin Tarantino live tribute band. This uniquely cool and raucous live band will bring audiences classic soul, funk, blues, and country soundtracks. Be Bop a Lula provides boogie-worthy hits from four of the greatest rock n roll icons of all time this September. Plus, The Bohemians promise to take audiences on a high-energy roller-coaster ride of a concert, featuring the back catalogue of one of the world’s most popular and iconic rock acts of all time in Queens Greatest Hits.

Get your autograph books at the ready because The Albany has no shortage of stars from stage and screen this summer season. Bernie Marsden, Whitesnake guitarist and one of rock’s true legends spends an evening at the theatre sharing tales from the golden age of rock n roll in Here I Go Again. Linda Nolan, Stephanie Dooley, Niki Evans, and Leanne Jones team up for a girl’s night out as they star in musical comedy sketch Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, a show full of laugh-out-loud antics and classic pop anthems that define what it is to be a 21st-century woman.

There’s also plenty to keep the kids entertained over the school holidays. Comedian turned stunt man Joe Zalias brings his interactive family-friendly show Joe Zalias and his Horrible Stunts for Kids to the main stage featuring crazy stunts, mysterious magic, and all-round carnage this August. Funny Business Theatre Company welcomes your little ones to join them on an enchanted bear hunt with their whimsical adaption of children’s classic Goldilocks and the Three Bear.

The team at The Albany is counting down the days until they can open their doors and welcome audiences and volunteers back to indulge in an afternoon or evening of soul-stirring entertainment. Keep your eyes peeled as the theatre announce more of what’s to come in a year of community, diversity and celebrating the culture of Coventry.

Tickets for all this and more can be booked online at www.albanytheatre.co.uk, or via the box office on 02476 99 89 64 or in person at the theatre on Albany Road (opening soon).
