Black Wall Street – The Dreamland
Thursday 24th October 2024

Mark your calendars for a musical experience like no other as Opus 18 Productions proudly presents Black Wall Street – The Dreamland, a compelling new production by the visionary Khareem Jamal, one of the creators of Black Heroes In The Hall of Fame.

Set against the backdrop of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921, Black Wall Street chronicles the extraordinary tale of Greenwood, an all-black suburb that defied societal expectations to become a beacon of success and affluence in the face of adversity.

In an era marred by racial prejudice and systemic oppression, the residents of Greenwood shattered stereotypes and forged a thriving community against all odds. From lawyers to bankers, doctors to entrepreneurs, they defied the prevailing notions of their time, challenging the entrenched racism that sought to confine them to the margins of society.

Inspired by the resilience and tenacity of the Greenwood community, writer and director Khareem Jamal masterfully weaves a narrative of hope, courage, and resilience. Against a backdrop of jazz-infused melodies and soul-stirring “Negro spirituals,” audiences will embark on a musical journey that celebrates the indomitable spirit of a people determined to carve out their own destiny.

Black Wall Street invites audiences to witness the highs and lows of a community on the brink of greatness, exploring themes of jealousy, resentment, and the enduring power of the human spirit. Through a tapestry of original songs crafted by the talented duo of Khareem Jamal &  Lloyd Wade, this musical masterpiece promises to evoke a range of emotions, from heartbreak to triumph, leaving audiences with a renewed sense of optimism and understanding.

Writer Khareem Jamal shared that “The audience will experience a roller coaster of emotions, from hope to despair and hope again. They can expect to be both entertained, enlightened and inspired, but most of all to witness an example of triumph over adversity. We are so looking forward to bringing that experience to theatres across the UK.
